Guthrie schools agree to settle lawsuit

Guthrie Public Schools has approved a proposed settlement agreement to resolve all claims following a Dec. 8, 2010 automobile and school bus accident.

Guthrie SchoolsThe case between Jeanette Gragg and the school district was filed on July 1, 2011 where Gragg sought to recover property and personal injury damages in excess of $10,000.

Gragg, in court documents, said her vehicle was struck by a school bus driven by Chester Welch.

During the monthly school board meeting on Monday, the Board of Education agreed to settle and pay Gragg and her attorney $6,500 for a full and complete settlement.

The school district filed a counterclaim against Gragg seeking property damage a month after Gragg’s claim, but the following month dismissed it as they sought $5,866.26 in damages to the bus.

The school alleged the collision occurred because Gragg had run a stop sign at the intersection of Simmons and Coltrane. Court documents show the Oklahoma Highway Patrol trooper determined Gragg’s vehicle was 3.6 feet past the painted intersection line at the time of the collision.
