St. Mary Catholic School and Guthrie Public Schools joined schools from around the world Wednesday morning to celebrate International Walk to School Day.
Students from St. Mary Catholic School, Guthrie Upper Elementary School (GUES), Fogarty and Central walked along-side with parents, teachers, community leaders and officers with the Guthrie Police Department.
Students from Fogarty met at the First Christian Church, GUES took off from the Armory and St. Mary’s made a trail from Highland Park.
In addition with officers walking with the students, the Guthrie Police Department provided traffic control along the routes.

Walk to School Day events raise awareness of the need to create safer routes for walking and bicycling and emphasize the importance of issues such as increasing physical activity among children, pedestrian safety, traffic congestion and concern for the environment. The events build connections between families, schools and the broader community.
“It’s fun for the kids to walk in big groups like this because it just feels safer, and there’s power in numbers. But there are kids of all ages walking and biking to Guthrie schools every day,” Justin Fortney of the Logan County Health Department said.
Fortney, who was seen walking with his son to school, says while it’s a great impact for the students he is hopeful it also serves as a reminder for adults.
“Hopefully seeing an event like today will remind drivers to slow down and keep an eye out for children,” Fortney said.
