Reed Roberts has been in some key moments his senior year on both the football and baseball field, but his latest action help send his team to next week’s Class 5A state tournament in Norman.
Roberts drilled a (2-2) pitched to right center field that just escaped the hustling centerfielder’s glove to fall and send the Jays back to the state tournament. Before the dramatic hit, with two outs and Jordan at first, Rowdy Reihs delivered a huge single to right field to set the table.
Blaze Hastings (7-3) struck out nine, paving the way for the Jays win. Hastings allowed two earned runs, three hits and three walks over seven innings.
Brady Bradshaw picked up the loss by going the distance. He walked three, struck out four, and allowed three runs.
Guthrie (30-8) broke a scoreless tie in the fifth inning when Jacob Chappell delivered a long sacrifice fly that scored Zane Maltz, who doubled to the start the inning off.
However, Noble would tie the game and eventual take the lead in the sixth inning with a double by Bradshaw, pass ball and a balk call that gave the Bears a 2-1 advantage.
Guthrie now awaits their first round state tourney opponent from the Shawnee Regional. The Jays will play Thursday at Norman North High School. The semi-finals and championship games will be played at the University of Oklahoma’s L. Dale Mitchell Park.
