Guthrie teachers receive $13k in grants from foundation

For the fifth straight year, the Guthrie Educational Foundation increased their amount of grants given. Last week, a group of educators received some of those benefits.

The foundation held their annual reception last Thursday at the Masonic Temple and handed out $13,695.61 to 18 educators that ranged from pre-kindergarten to the high school. See the list of recipients: 2012 Grants Awarded.

The Foundation Board meets each semester to select grants submitted by teachers. Each grant application states the purpose, benefit, and cost itemization of the funding requested.  Grants cannot be used for teacher compensation. In addition, the board selects projects and awards which, in its view, add significantly to the mission of the Foundation and the success of the Guthrie Public Schools.

“In the last 5 years the foundation has given $65,000.00 to help provide equipment, books and other items to help teachers do their jobs,” Steve Hannah said. “During that same time we have been able to raise endowed funds of over $50,000.00 that will not be spent but used to generate future income.

The foundation also recognized the various site teachers of the year, including the district teacher of the year Melanie Ball.

The Guthrie Educational Foundation was established by parents, civic leaders, and community volunteers who believe the quality of life and economic development of a community are related to the quality of the local education system. A board of volunteers oversees the mission of the foundation and operates independently of the school administration or school board of the Guthrie Public Schools.
