Guthrie Tennis competes well at Public Schools Championships; GJHS finishes strong

Duncan played host to the Class 5A Public Schools Championships with the Guthrie teams competing well with multiple second-place finishes.

Hollie and Aspen Mitchell placed second in No. 2 doubles, Lane Goode and Carson Olmsted placed second in No. 1 doubles, Mason and Jaxson Mayer placed second in No. 2 doubles, and Jillian Minter and Rylee Tobin placed second in No. 1 doubles.

Gavin Cook placed sixth in No. 2 singles, Isaiah Dearman placed fifth in No. 1 singles, Emma Poupard placed third in No. 1 singles, and Kylee Nelson placed fifth in No. 2 singles.

“(I’m) so proud of all these kids and how hard they work,” head coach Mary Hudson said.

Before playing in Duncan, the high school competed in the Bishop McGuinness Tennis Invitational at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center.

The Mitchell sisters (Hollie and Aspen) placed second at No. 2 doubles, the Mayer brothers (Mason and Jaxson) won the No. 2 doubles draw, and Lane Goode and Carson Olmsted placed third at No. 1 doubles.

“Proud of all these guys, (they) competed hard today,” Hudson said after the long day.

Guthrie came away with first-place medals after playing in the Suburban Conference Tournament.

Lane Goode and Mason Mayer won the Suburban Conference tournament at No. 1 doubles, Rylee Tobin and Jillian Minter won the tournament at No. 1 doubles, and Hollie and Aspen Mitchell won at No. 2 doubles.

The Lady Jays also competed well at the Ada Tennis Tournament.

Kenzie Hardesty placed sixth at No. 2 singles, Hollie and Aspen Mitchell placed fifth at No. 2 doubles, Jillian Minter placed fifth with her partner Rylee Tobin at No. 1 doubles, and Emma Poupard placed third at No. 1 singles.

“So proud of these girls and how they competed today,” Hudson said. “All of them placed higher than their seed with the exception of No. 1 doubles and their only loss was to Ada.”

Guthrie Junior High Tennis

Congratulations to the Guthrie Junior High tennis team for placing third at the Edmond Qualifying Tournament. Lola Brown placed fourth at No. 1 singles, Teagan Duehning and Lania Woodard placed fourth at No. 1 doubles, Haven Hudson placed fifth at No. 2 singles, and Taylor Shipley and Kinley Nelson placed fifth at No. 2 doubles.

The tournament was a 16-team draw and the girls were two points away from qualifying for State.

In other action, Haven Hudson and Lola Brown placed fifth at No. 2 singles and No. 1 singles at the Henryetta Qualifier, while Trenton Edberg and Drake Shelton placed second at No. 1 doubles at the Mustang Junior High Tennis Tournament.

The Girls Junior High Tennis Team placed second behind Carl Albert by one point.

Teagan Duehning and Taylor Shipley placed second at No. 1 doubles. Lola Brown won the No. 1 singles draw and Haven Hudson won the No. 2 singles draw. Lania Woodard and Kinley Nelson placed third in No. 2 doubles.
