Guthrie head football coach Kelly Beeby says it was a big day for the town of Guthrie with three members of the football program signing their letter of intent to play on the next level.
In front of a packed Guthrie High School library, Michael Pruitt, JaRon Pryor and Ja’lyn Morgan each signed and thank everyone for their support. Pruitt and Pryor signed with Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College (NEO) in Miami, Okla. and Morgan with Southwestern Oklahoma State in Weatherford, Okla.
In addition, Beeby announced to the crowd that Jays wide receiver Chance Whitt will be a preferred walk-on at NEO.
Beeby says with the signings it’s a big day for the program and the Guthrie community.
“It’s not only the football program, but all the sports, counselors and classroom teachers that have created a product that colleges want to work with.”
Pruitt was a staple on the right side of the Jays offensive line in his two years of service. Due to injuries on the defensive side for the Jays, Pruitt was forced into action on the defensive line and made a presence.
“I want to thank everyone for coming to support me, a smiling but shy Pruitt said. “I want to thank my parents for all that they have done for me and all of my coaches who helped me to become the player that I am today.”
Beeby says he couldn’t be more proud of his two-year starter.
“When I talk about the family environment that is Guthrie Football, I don’t think there is a stronger case than this young man. People close to this program have watch this young man grow as an individual. He’s learn to trust and communicate and top of that he’s a pretty good football player.”
Morgan was a two-way player for the Bluejays. On offense, Morgan hauled in five catches in the season opener against Duncan and finished the season with one touchdown. On defense, Morgan hauled in three interceptions and added up 30 tackles. He was to the First-Team defense in District 5A-2.
“He’s been a contributor in three ways (offense, defense and special teams) for us. He’s a good academic kid. I’m very proud of his accomplishments and proud for his family,” Beeby said.
Morgan who had a key interception in the 2013 state championship game says he’s humbled by the opportunity.
“I want to thank everyone coming out here and showing that you care for me. I’m really happy and I love you all.”
Pryor was named District 5A-2’s First Team Athlete of the Year after finishing his senior season with 49 tackles and five sacks. Related story: ‘Jays JaRon Pryor named to OCA All-State team
“Jaron has done everything for us over the past two years and this year for sure,” Beeby said. “He’s very selfless. I guarantee to you, JaRon Pryor, is playing in the All-State football game this year in large part because his performance against Altus in the first round (of the playoffs). Great character kid and we have been blessed he’s been a part of our program.”
The shy and low voice Pryor told everyone he’s looking to make Guthrie proud.
“Thank you guys for your support and I could not have done this without you guys, especially my teammates, family and my coaches. I want to thank you for giving me a chance to play at the next level and I promise you I will make Guthrie proud.”
