Cottonwood Creek expected to come out this evening

Update Tuesday 10:35 p.m. – The National Service measured the Cottonwood Creek at 21.4 feet at 9:30 p.m. with an anticipation of the river cresting at 22.9 feet. Both measurements are considered minor flooding.

Update Tuesday 9:20 p.m. – The Cottonwood Creek is slowly moving up to the banks, but has has not crossed the road under the viaduct on Guthrie’s west side of town.

The creek has come up to the road at the location of 10th and Cleveland and the 12th and Coltrane Road has been closed off with barricades.

Officials believe it will be a quick event, but have not establish when the river may recedes.

At 7:00, the National Weather Service measured the creek at 20.4 feet with 22 feet labeled as a minor flood level. The service is expecting the creek to crest at 22.9 feet and labeled as a minor flood. A moderate flood is labeled at 25 feet.

Many have asked about the flood and Guthrie Public Schools. A decision will not be made until more information is collected to determine when the river will recede.

Guthrie does not have much history and experience with earthquakes until just recently, but one thing for sure Guthrie has experience with flooding.

City officials are expecting the Cottonwood Creek to slip out of its boundaries this evening, on the west side of town, between 8:00 and 10:00 p.m.

According to officials, the Creek has risen 21 inches between 4:00 and 5:00 this afternoon. The flood stage is 22 feet.

The Cimarron River is expected to stay within its banks at this time.

Fire and Police will have a presence established on the west side of town as “safety will not be compromised.”

Guthrie Fire Chief Eric Harlow stressed citizens to be cautious, “people need to avoid water on the road ways at all times and obey barricades and signs.”

The Guthrie area and Logan County have been placed under a Flood Warning. The warning extends until Wednesday morning at 7:00.

At the current time (4:00 p.m.) Broadway near Seward Road has been closed due to the Cottonwood Creek expanding its boundaries.
