Guthrie’s Luke Morgan clears first hurdle to professional golf

Luke Morgan (left) is one step closer to his goal of becoming a professional golfer.

2020 Guthrie High School graduate and recent Baylor University grad, Luke Morgan, is one step closer to his dream of becoming a professional golfer.

Morgan is vying for a spot on the Korn Ferry Tour (KFT), the feeder system to the PGA. The top 125 players in the world play on the PGA Tour, while those outside that group, like Morgan, aim to qualify through the KFT. Notable players like current world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler transitioned from the KFT to the PGA, showcasing how critical this tour is for aspiring professionals.

This week, the KFT kicked off its grueling qualifying process, known as Q-School, where golfers compete in regional pre-qualifying events across eight locations. Each player has just 54 holes to make the cut, and those who fall short not only lose their entry fee but must wait a full year to try again. Morgan took on the challenge at Sand Creek Station in Newton, Kansas, bringing along his former Guthrie teammate and recent Oklahoma City University graduate, Bo Robbins, as his caddie. The field at Sand Creek Station was packed with talent, including Big 12 alumni, standout amateurs, and even NFL broadcaster and former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo. Former Oklahoma State golfers Hazen Newman and Dillon Stewart secured their spots, while ex-Sooners Blake Lorenz and Luke Kluver could not advance.

Morgan found himself right on the cut line after 36 holes, and by the 45th hole, he was two strokes behind. With the pressure mounting, Morgan and Robbins decided to go all-in for the final nine holes. Their strategy paid off, as Morgan delivered his best tournament performance, sinking three birdies and finishing with six pars. His impressive final stretch vaulted him to 21st place, comfortably inside the top 30 who advance to the next stage.

Both Morgan and Robbins are no strangers to competitive golf. They each had decorated junior careers, were named All-State in 2020, and contributed to Guthrie’s two team state titles. Morgan also claimed an individual state championship. However, both admitted that the pressure of the final nine holes at Q-School was unlike anything they had experienced before.

Morgan has little time to rest, as the next round of qualifiers is just weeks away in early October. Guthrie News Page will continue to follow his journey as he takes the next steps toward earning a spot on professional golf’s biggest stage.
