Guthrie High School Principal Dusty Throckmorton announced that senior Matthew J. Mihalik has been recognized as a Commended Student in the 2025 National Merit Scholarship Program. Mihalik will receive a Letter of Commendation from the school and the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC®), which oversees the program, to honor his academic achievement.
Approximately 34,000 students across the nation are being recognized as Commended Students for their exceptional academic promise. While these students will not continue in the competition for National Merit Scholarships, they rank among the top 50,000 students out of more than 1.5 million who entered the 2025 competition by taking the 2023 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®).
“Commended Students like Matthew have demonstrated remarkable potential for academic success and represent a valuable national resource,” said a spokesperson for NMSC. “Recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the support of their schools, is critical in promoting educational excellence across the country. We hope this honor encourages them to continue striving for academic success and expands their educational opportunities.”
