With the regular season drawing to an end for the Guthrie tennis teams, the Suburban Conference held its annual tournament.
The Lady Jays No. 2 doubles team of Sarah Howells and
Carrisa Mathena took third place to highlight the day for Guthrie.
In their first round they defeated Piedmont 6-0, 6-0, but dropped their second round to Deer Creek in three sets. In their next round, they defeated Shawnee 6-3, 6-2 and in their final match beat Harrah 6-2, 6-1.
“These two girls have played so well together all year and have an excellent chance to make it to state,” Guthrie head coach Mary Hudson just days before regionals are to begin on the same courts at Oklahoma City Tennis Center.
In other girl’s doubles action, Brooke Powell and Taylar Swartzbaugh defeated Western Heights 6-4, 6-1 in No. 1 doubles. In the second round they lost to Harrah 6-3, 6-2 and in their final round they lost to Carl Albert due to injury default.
In singles action, Cheyenne Royal and Heidi Kuruvilla dropped both of their matches. Royal dropped two sets to Morgan Murphy, the top seeded player in the field, and then dropped a tough three set match against a Chickasha opponent in a the third set tie-breaker.
“She improves every time she steps on the court,” Hudson added.
BlueJays doubles teams take fourth
No. 1 doubles team of Josh Wehrenberg and Barrett Porter and the No. 2 team of Andy Hartley and Seth Vicchio each split their four matches by winning 
two and dropping two.
In Poter’s and Wehrenberg’s first round match they defeated Harrah. In the second round they lost to Carl Albert 6-1, 6-3 and in the next round took down Western Heights 6-0, 6-1. In the third place match, they lost to Deer Creek in three sets.
For Hartley and Vicchio they defeated Chickasha 6-3, 6-1 to begin the day, but in the second round they lost to Carl Albert 6-0, 6-2. In the next round they defeated El Reno 6-0, 6-1 and for third lost to Harrah 6-3, 6-3.
It was a tough day for single players Dalton Jones and Dylan Walker.
Jones, who was playing No. 1 singles, lost in the first round to Shawnee 6-1, 6-0, in the second round he lost to El Reno, and in his final round he defeated Harrah. Meanwhile, Walker lost his first round to Chickasha, second round to Piedmont, and Harrah in his last match.
Both teams will travel back to the OKC Tennis Center on Thursday and Friday for the Heritage Hall Tournament.
