There are football teams that are young and inexperienced then there are the Ponca City Wildcats. The ‘Cats travel on Friday for the first home game of the season for the BlueJays. The kick-off is set for 7 p.m.

Ponca City dropped their opening game last week, at home, against Sapulpa 48-7. Meanwhile, Guthrie rolled to an easy 46-6 win in Duncan.

Friday night’s game inside Jelsma Stadium will be the fourth straight meeting between the two schools with the Jays winning all three contests by wide margins, including the last two seasons by identical scores of 43-7.

The Wildcats begin the season without one offensive starter from a year ago. Last week, Ponca found the endzone once, but second year head coach Josh Allen is hoping to get the offense going with the passing game.

The ‘Cats will line up with receivers Keller Elwood, Riley Sells and Raylon Gaines. Last year, Sells brought in five passes for 41 yards. The biggest target will be tight end J.T. Hopkins.

Ponca City should show more in the passing game than what the Jays saw last week with Duncan’s wishbone type offense.

Duncan managed just 77 yards of offense with 45 of those yards coming on the lone passing score in the second quarter. Afterwards, the Demons managed 32 total yards and finished with 10 rushing yards.

In the loss to Sapulpa, Ponca allowed over 400 yards of offense, including 245 yards on the ground as four different Chieftains scored. Sapulpa used their passing game to connect for 204 yards and three scores.

The Ponca defense will try and contain the Jays running attack. Senior Kai Callins rushed seven times, but finished with 112 yards. Aiding in the running game nicely was junior Idae Alexander, who finished with 66 yards and three touchdown scores.

Guthrie is now 9-1 in non-district games since 2010 and 6-0 at home during the same time frame. In addition, Guthrie has won 21 straight home games dating back to the 2009 season.

The game can be heard on Triple Play Sports Radio 105.1 FM and on the internet at www.GuthireSportsPage.com, including on mobile devices. The pregame show begins at 6:30.
