The Guthrie junior high football teams were in action on Thursday night as they traveled up to Ponca City to begin four straight road games.
The seventh grade team jumped out to an 8-0 lead when quarterback Kaiden Stevenson scored from 15-yards.
Ponca City responded with a score of their own and a two-point conversion to tie the game at 8-all.
Stevenson was back into the end zone and the Jays were back in the lead at 14-8, but the Jays failed on their two-point try that proved to be big.
On a jet sweep play, Ponca City hit pay dirt and followed that with a successful two-point conversion to pull ahead and eventually hold on to a 16-14 win.
The seventh grade team falls to 1-3 on the year.
The eighth grade Bluejays got back in the win column by shutting out the Wildcats. The Jays defense was the story of the game as they did not allow a first down in the second half. In the process, the Ponca City varsity coach gave the Bluejays high praise for their efforts.
On offense, Guthrie got two scores from their quarterback Cale Coffman and Cade Guggensberg had several big runs on rocket sweep plays.
Coffman’s first score came on a short run. On the two-point try, Coffman hit Justin Adams in the backfield with a pass and ran in for two points.
Leading 8-0, Coffman scored one final time from one-yard out. The extra point was no good and the score stayed at 14-0.
For the Jays defense, JD Coonfield was huge on the night from his defensive end spot as he collected several tackles for loss.
Just before halftime it appeared Ponca City’s work horse running back was headed to the end zone, but defensive back Bo Robbins was able to track him down for the touchdown saving tackle. Despite the hustle tackle, Ponca City was still threatening from inside the Jays 20-yard line with under a minute of the first half.
On first down, linebacker Greg Scroggins sacked the Ponca quarterback for a 13 yard loss and eventually ending the threat.
The Jays will travel to Chickasha on Oct. 1 with the seventh grade kicking off at 5:30 p.m.
