Softball drops four of five games; on the road for regionals

The Guthrie Softball team ran into a drought this week by losing four out of five games and now will be on the road for regionals in two weeks.

The Lady Jays dropped a double-header last Friday in Shawnee to Tushka and Shawnee. In the first game, Shawnee claimed a 14-8 victory and Tushka, the number one team in Class 2A, followed that up with an 8-4 win. On the following day at Hall of Fame Stadium, Guthrie fell to Class 4A’s eighth ranked team Broken Bow by a final of 7-1.

Despite the three losses, the Lady Jays remained focused on their final two district games. With two wins, the Lady Jays would host regionals for the first time in a long, long time.

Guthrie was impressive on Tuesday by sweeping by Northwest Classen 11-1 to set them up with Deer Creek on Thursday. The winner would secure second place in the district and host regionals.

Deer Creek got going early and never looked back. The Antlers connected on a two-run homer in the first to take a 2-0 early lead and later a 3-1 advantage four innings.

Guthrie got going in the top of the fifth inning by scratching two runs in to tie the game at 3-all, but in the home half of the inning Deer Creek scored four runs to take a 7-3 lead.

The Lady Jays would not go away and pulled within a run in the sixth inning by scoring three more runs to make it a 7-6 game. However, Deer Creek scored six runs in the bottom of the inning to put the game away at 13-6.

Deer Creek will host regionals when they begin in two weeks and now the Lady Jays appear they will be heading to Lawton MacArthur for their regional play, but before regionals get started the Lady Jays will play host to Shawnee on Monday and Noble on Tuesday. They will conclude the season with a trip to Ponca City on Thursday.
