The largest crowd of the season is expected Friday night inside Jelsma Stadium when the Guthrie Bluejays take on the Lawton Ike Eagles for the first meeting between the two programs.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. for the Homecoming event and can be heard on the radio dial at 93.7 FM and across the web at Guthrie Sports Page and Guthrie News Page.
The Bluejays are coming off a 56-12 win over Northwest Classen and are 3-3 overall. For Lawton Ike they enter 1-5 overall. Both teams share 1-2 District 5A-2 records.
Both the Bluejays and Eagles feel they must win out, or come close to qualify for the playoffs.
Lawton Ike is playing in their first year in Class 5A. After starting the season 0-3 against excellent teams in top-ranked Lawton MacArthur, Del City and Class 6A Lawton. The Eagles got their only victory back in week four with a 40-10 win over Guymon. Since the win, Lawton has dropped their last two games by two touchdowns against Piedmont and Woodward.
Despite their record, the Eagles have shown they can be a dangerous team when they’re healthy. Several starters have missed games throughout the year and Jays head coach Kelly Beeby says they will have to wait until the game starts to see exactly who is suited out for the Eagles.
Eagles quarterback R.J. Fisher was held out of last week’s game with an ankle injury suffered in a loss to Piedmont on an apparent horse-collar tackle. Mookie Douglas replaced Fisher as the signal caller.
Linebacker Armon Martin suffered a knee injury leaving the Eagles searching for experience at the key defensive position.
A year ago, Fisher piled up 669 rushing yards and tossed over 1,000 yards in the spread offense.
Douglas, a talented wide receiver, suffered an injury that cost him the entire 2015 season.
Ike’s running back Kenneth Graham rushed over 500 yards a season ago and is helping the offense average nearly 28 points per game.
Lawton’s defense returns six starters from last year’s 1-9 ball club.
If Martin is unable to play, the Eagles will search to replace his 98 tackles from a year ago.
The Eagles have not shown much depth at the offensive and defensive line and will several players on both sides.
