Three of the four playoff spots have been taken in District 5A-2 and come Friday night Guthrie and Woodward will have an inside track for that final spot.
Guthrie finishes the last two weeks of the regular season inside Jelsma Stadium and will lean on the home crowd to hopefully secure a playoff berth. The first chance comes Friday when the Jays host Woodward.
Both the Bluejays and Boomers enter 4-4 overall. Woodward enters with a one game lead over the Jays with a 3-2 district record compared to the Jays at 2-3. However, Woodward finishes with Carl Albert and the Jays close out with Guymon.
Guthrie is coming off a disappointing 22-14 loss to Piedmont while Woodward had zero issues with a 48-20 win over Guymon. Boomers quarterback Luke Vanderwork tossed two scores while Slaydon Covalt rushed for three more scores in the win over 1-7 Guymon.
Guymon managed just 111 yards against the Boomer defense, which also forced four turnovers.
The Boomers are back in Class 5A and are led by first year head coach Craig Hixon.
After a 1-2 start in the non-district, Woodward has won three of their last five games with wins over Northwest, Lawton Eisenhower and Guymon. Their four losses have come against Clinton, Weatherford, McGuinness and Piedmont.
Guthrie and Woodward last met in 2007 as the Jays traveled to western Oklahoma and collected a 69-0 win. In the series dating back to 2001, the Jays are 5-0.
