The Guthrie BlueJays have now seen just about all the elite teams in Class 5A this season and perhaps saw the best offensive team in the class on day one of the 2011 state baseball tournament in Claremore.

The Jays collected 14 runs and 15 hits, but that was not enough as the second ranked Bishop Kelley Comets were too much for BlueJay pitchers as they won game one 18-14.

Both teams had to go to their bullpen often. In fact, both teams used four pitchers in the game that took two hours and 30 minutes.
Guthrie (27-12) now moves on and plays Carl Albert in an elimination game Thursday afternoon at 1:30. Carl Albert was upset by Shawnee, 11-4, in a game that saw a three-hour rain delay. The delay pushed back the scheduled third game (Guthrie and Carl Albert) from Wednesday evening to Thursday afternoon at 1:30.
The Jays jumped out to a 2-0 lead when Luke Davis doubled and then came home on a RBI single by Landry Chappell. Hayden Seifert followed Chappell with a RBI double for the third straight BlueJay hit.
Kelley responded with three runs of their own in their first at bat as they batted around and in the process collected four hits on BlueJay starting pitcher Dutton. The sophomore hurler suffered the loss on the mound, but was 3-for-5 at the plate with four RBIs.
Both starting pitchers calmed down in the second inning and did not allow a run, but the bats quickly came back alive in the third.
The Jays struck for three runs, but only to see the Comets put seven on the board to take a 10-5 lead. Guthrie collected four singles in a row from John Clark, Jacob Chappell, Scott Pickle, and Reed Roberts with Clark, Chappell, and Pickle collecting RBIs. The inning started with Dutton collected a single.
Dutton continued his hot hitting when he slammed his 10th home run this season to left center to pull his team within four, 10-6, but the Comets offense came back with six more runs in their home half of the fourth to take a 16-6 advantage.
The Jays needed at least one run to keep the game going and avoid the 10-run, five inning run-rule and they did just that plus more with seven runs.
Guthrie brought 10 men to the plate and took advantage of three walks and an error, but also connected for three hits with two of those swings providing five RBIS.
With the bases loaded, Dutton fouled off several pitches before delivering a shot to centerfield, where it flew over the head of the center fielder to clear the bases with a head first slide into third as the Jays dropped the deficit down to six, 16-10. Davis then reached on an error to score Dutton before Landry Chappell sent a towering shot that traveled every bit of 370 feet for his eight homer and more importantly narrowing the Comets lead to within three, 16-13.
However, it was the heavy hitting Comets (25-7), who finished with 16 hits, responded with two runs in the fifth to go up 18-13 after five innings.
The final run in the game in the sixth inning when Jacob Chappell, who walked, scored on a double by Pickle that found the right center field wall. Pickle finished with two RBIs on the day.
