Jays take sixth in Bluejay Bash; gearing up for regionals in Guthrie

The Guthrie High School boy’s golf team continues their competitive run through the 2017 season and a familiar foe continues to battle the Jays.

Monday the team traveled to Shawnee Country Club and came away as the runner-up to the Guymon Tigers 330 to 315.

Shawnee CC was a tough test as always, but freshmen Luke Morgan was able to overcome it for the most part firing a 74 good enough for second place as an individual.

On Thursday, the Jays headed home for the Annual Blue Jay Bash at Cimarron National and Aqua Canyon. The Bash is a 36-hole continuous play format that was host to 30 teams which it makes one of the largest, if not the largest, high school invitational in Oklahoma.

160 golfers from 4A to 6A schools teed it up and in less than 10 hours after 36 holes, lunch and awards ceremony, the parking lot was empty. The Bluejays finished sixth as a team at 629.

Luke Morgan was again the only medal the Jays picked up finished fourth (losing in a scorecard playoff to Stillwater’s Jack Glenn) while shooting 144 (70 Aqua/74 Cimarron).

The only 5A school to clip the Jays was again the Guymon Tigers at 612. In four meetings with the Tigers this season (Lawton, Duncan, Shawnee and The Bash) the Jays have two wins and two loses.

Heritage Hall was the overall team champion at 599. Plainview was second at 607, Stillwater third at 609, Guymon fourth at 612 andChoctaw fifth at 620.

The individual medalist was Zach Strader of Plainview with a 139 (68 Aqua/71 Cimarron).

The sixth place finish put the Jays ahead of Edmond Memorial, Mustang, Enid, McGuinness, Piedmont, Duncan and many other tough squads.

Freshmen Luke Roach posted a strong 153 to back up Morgan’s fourth place finish. Senior Jarrott Gates had a few late stumbles, but still posted at respectable 161 while Bo Robbins fought a cold putter and ended up with a 172.

The Bluejays will work hard over the weekend as they prepare for the 5A West Regional, which will be played at Cedar Valley (Augusta) on Monday at 8:30 a.m.  The top six teams and the top six individuals not on a top six team will head to the State Tournament in Duncan.
