The Guthrie Junior High football teams opened their season with wins over Shawnee inside Jelsma Stadium on August 30.
In the seventh grade game, Guthrie jumped out to an 8-0 lead when quarterback Isaac Lewis lobbed a pass into the end zone and found Evan Kowalski for pay dirt. The Jays hit the two-point conversion with a Lewis pass to Payton Milner in the center of the end zone.
Shawnee responded with an early second quarter touchdown, but failed on the two-point attempt to cut the Jays lead down to 8-6.
Guthrie concluded the scoring in the ball game with a second quarter score with Lewis finding Troy Branson to go up 14-6. The two-point conversion was no good.
8th Grade starts slow finishes strong
The eighth grade scored 16 points in each half and held off the Wolves for a 32-20 win.
Cal Davis got things going on the scoreboard in the second quarter with a 3-yard run and capped off with a Bryce Anderson two-point conversion for an 8-0 lead with 4:16 to play in the half.
Just before the end of the half, Guthrie found the north end zone when quarterback Dalton Graybeal spotted a streaking Ty Doolin for a 25 yard score to go up 14-0 and Davis ran the ball in on the two-point conversion to go up 16-0.
Shawnee put back-to-back touchdown drives together to pull within two points, 16-12, by the end of the third quarter.
Guthrie was able to go back up by double digits, 24-12, on an impressive 54-yard run by Davis and a two-point conversion by Doolin, but Shawnee responded three minutes later to pull back within striking distance at 24-20.
However less than two minutes later, Davis added a 55-yard touchdown run to his resume with 2:54 left in the game. Doolin finished the scoring with the two-point conversion score.
