The Guthrie Junior High boys golf team continued their dominating 2016 season by breezing through the Suburban Conference. For the Lady Jays, a familiar name came away with a victory.
Drew Dodgion won the conference championship by eight shots on Thursday at The Golf Links in Norman. Kelsey Raney and Eylssa Damron both finished in the top 10 with a fourth and ninth place finish.
Overall, the Lady Jays placed second in the team standings.
For the boys squad, they brought home their second consecutive conference championship with a team total of 319.
The format was 18 holes of stroke play, with all five team members playing together while being scored by a coach. While the rest of the Jays struggled to find their footing early on, they were paced on the opening nine by eighth grader Bo Robbins, who carded a career-best tournament 9-hole score of even par 36.
After starting off with consecutive bogeys, Robbins played the next seven holes in 2-under par. On the back nine, the rest of the Jays kicked it into gear.
Luke Morgan, an eighth grader, carded a 33 on the back 9 while making fuve birdies, while fellow eighth grader Luke Roach improved his back 9 by five strokes shooting a 37 also picking up two birdies.
Seventh grade twin brothers Brady and Jaxon Hirzel both dramatically lowered their back 9 scores and each picked up a birdie as well.
On the day, at least one Bluejay golfer birdied 17 out of the 18 holes, with the par-3 12th being the only one without a red number on the card.
In the individual race, the Bluejays finished 1-2-3 with Morgan firing a 73 (40-33) to take the Conference Medalist honors. Roach (42-37) and Robbins (36-43) each fired a 79, and after a scorecard tiebreaker Roach was awarded second and Robbins third. Brady Hirzel (46-42) finished sixth and Jaxon Hirzel (51-48) finished up 10th.
The Junior Jays lone loss this season came at Lake Hefner at the hands of Edmond Sequoyah by just three shots, but at the same time besting perennial powers such as Oakdale and Deer Creek.
The Jays have already started their tour seasons, with Morgan recently picking up a top-10 on the elite OJGT Tour, Robbins near the top of the points list with multiple top five finishes on the US Kids Tulsa Tour and Roach recently picked up a win at Lake Hefner on the OKC US Kids Tour.
