Junior High wins rematch with Kingfisher; Jays score three in the 7th

It was a rematch of last week’s championship game in the Kingfisher junior high tournament and the rematch lived up to the hype between Guthrie and Kingfisher. Only this time it was in the Guthrie Invitational.

Kingfisher rallied in the seventh inning to take a two-run lead over the Guthrie Junior High summer team and appeared the Jays were going to suffer their first loss of the Guthrie Invitational. However, the Jays needed five batters to score three runs to win in walk off fashion.

After loading the bases with the benefit of three consecutive walks, the Jays got back-to-back base hits from Bryce Robinson and Nolan Gagnon to take a 5-3 deficit to a 6-3 victory. Robinson singled in Brody Hinkle and Nolan Gagnon’s two RBI single to left field plated Dustin Wilcott and Blake Curtin.

The Jays improved to 2-0 in the tournament and will play Stillwater at 12:15 on Saturday to play for the championship at 7 p.m.

The game featured two hurlers, whom both went the distance, with Kingfisher’s Chris Patton and Guthrie’s Ashton Hartley. Patton struck out 14 Jays while Hartley countered with 10 punch outs.

Guthrie scored the game’s first run in the second when Johnny Scroggins started the frame with a single to right-centerfield. Next, Marcealous Owens reached on an error and three batters later Hinkle reached base via a Kingfisher throwing error that brought home Scroggins.

The Jackets responded in the third inning to tie the game at 1-all. After retiring six straight via the strikeout, Hartley walked a batter, who later scored on a double that smashed into the left field wall.

Hartley found more trouble in the third when the first four men reached base to take a 2-1 lead. Although, it could have been worse. With the bases loaded and the leadoff man at the plate, Hartley got his man to hit a come backer to him for a 1-2-3 double play to escape the inning.

The Jays took the lead back in the fifth when Wilcott tripled over the head of the center fielder and scored three pitches later on a wild pitch to tie the game at 2-2. Curtin reached on an error and later scored on a double play ball to give the Jays the lead back, 3-2.

In the top of the seventh, the Jackets took advantage of a Jays error, but laced out three hits, including a triple to push ahead, 5-3, but only to see the Jays rally for the win.
