The Guthrie Junior High football season got kicked off the right way by sweeping the Shawnee Wolves inside Jelsma Stadium Thursday evening.
The 7th grade Jays found themselves in a 6-0 hole when the Wolves connected on a 30-yard pass and catch. However, the Jays held the Wolves on the two-point conversion with an interception.
Guthrie got on the board for the first time in 2011 when Ty Doolin scampered in on a 5-yard run and when Doolin hit Zac Payne the Jays had an 8-6 lead. A lead they would never relinquish.
The lone score in the second half came on the legs of Doolin once more. This time Doolin scooted in from 19-yards to give the Jays a 14-6 lead with 6:10 to play in the third quarter.
8th grade rolls
Much like in the 7th grade game, the Shawnee eight grade team jumped out to a 6-0 lead, but the Jays would then ravel off 20-unanswered points and eventually winning 20-12.
Shawnee’s talented and shifty quarterback Jackson Winrow darted into the end zone with a 42-yard score just 1:58 into the game. The two-point conversion failed to keep the score at 6-0. Well, for 16 seconds anyway.
On the ensuing kick-off, Guthrie’s Jalyn Morgan darted in and out of would be Shawnee tacklers and scored on a 70-yard return. Guthrie captured the two-point conversion Terran Daniel got into the end zone to give the Jays an 8-6 advantage.
The Jays got back on the score board in the second quarter twice. The first score coming quarterback Zane Maltz connected with Morgan on a beautiful deep ball and when Morgan hit pay dirt the play was good for 73 yards. However, the two-point conversion failed to keep it a 14-6 lead.
The second score came just before halftime. Defensive back Jaron Pryor intercepted a Shawnee pass at the Wolves 40-yard line and took it down inside the 10. Just plays later Maltz found tight end Chase Bufford on a tight end hot route in the center of the field to score with just 29 seconds left before the half. Again, the two-point conversion failed and the Jays took a 20-6 lead into the half.
The lone second half score came from the Wolves when Winrow scored his second touchdown on the evening from 3-yards out. The Wolves were forced to go for the onside kick, but Guthrie jumped on it to put the game away.
Both Guthrie squads return to the gridiron next Thursday when they travel to Noble.
