The start of the 2012 season started with a bang for Guthrie’s junior Kai Callins, but his season came to a crashing end in the first half of the season opener.

Callins received the disappointing news late Saturday afternoon that he had torn his MCL and a partial tear to his ACL in the right knee and will miss the rest of the season and likely the upcoming GHS basketball season.

Callins, who was in shorts and crutches on the sideline in the second half, was a one-man show with three touchdown scores in the first quarter, including scoring runs of 61 and 43 yards.

He finished with 96 yards rushing on just four carries and added a receiving score of 15 yards to help Guthrie in their season opening win over Duncan, 43-0.

The injured came on what would have been his fourth touchdown of the game, but was called back due to penalties. Callins went down in the northeast corner of the end zone.

A season ago, the running back and defensive back was an instrumental part of the football team winning the state championship as well aiding the Guthrie basketball team in reaching the state semi-finals.

As a sophomore, Callins rushed for 700 yards an 10 touchdowns on 76 rushes to go with 361 receiving yards and five touchdowns. On defense, at his cornerback spot, he collected 49 tackles and four interceptions.

Callins will have surgery to repair the injuries.

Kai, I was in Fl. heard the sad news of your injury. You will bounce back , and be a force to recon with in BB and again in FB. Sure will miss seeing you do ur stuff on the field, where ur brother was a force that drove the other teams wild in trying to contain him. Be brave and do ur rehab and give us folks in Guthrie that know and love ur family, a happy time again. Our prayers go out for
you and for a quick recovery. God bless.
