Lady Jays win 5A pre-state race in Edmond; boys take fourth

Senior Eli Fortney paces himself on the Edmond Santa Fe course. Fortney helped lead the Jays to a fourth place finish at the Pre-State Race.

After Saturday’s run in Edmond the Guthrie cross country programs know exactly what they will be facing when they take the same course for the state championship run in October.

Edmond Santa Fe hosted all the schools across the state on Saturday for a preview of what the October 28 state meet will look like.

The Guthrie Lady Jays took advantage and set the tone for the final month of the season by coming away with an 11-point win to win the meet.

The Jays finished with a team-low 60 points and were followed by Thomas Edison (71), Tahlequah (88) and Blanchard (122).

The team finished with three in the top 10, including senior Kamryn Boller finishing fourth overall, Hannah Smith eighth, and freshman Taylor Schroder ninth. The other two runners assisting in points were Payton Read (18th) and Raley Hooper (21st).

Boller ran a 20:56, Smith a 21:44, Schroder a 21:48, Read a 23:15, and Hooper a 23:29.

At last year’s state meet, Boller ran 19:44, on the same course, for seventh place in an all-state finish. As a sophomore, Boller ran a 20:22 to finish 13th overall.

The overall winner went to Elgin’s Audrey Mcelhaney who ran a 19:55.

Guthrie is not only an experienced team but also experienced on the state course, including a third-place finish a season ago.

For the boys’ program, they took fourth overall with 121 team points.

Coming away with the team title was Guymon with 45 points. Tahlequah finished a distant second with 83 points and was followed by Blanchard’s 110 points.

Senior Eli Fortney continues his solid season by pacing the Jays with a seventh-place finish in a time of 17:25. Right behind him was his fellow senior teammate Mason Mayer with a time of 17:32 for the eighth-place finish.

Beckett Terry finished 18th (18:17), Isaac Talley took 34th (19:34) and rounding out the scoring was James Bickell (20:35).

Guthrie will run at the Suburban Conference meet on Oct. 6, regionals on Oct. 21, and the state meet on Oct. 28.

Regional assignments will be released on Oct. 13.
