Langston University announced last week they have mutually agree to part ways with their head football coach. The announcement came just days before Langston’s homecoming game.
Dwone Sanders was in his fourth season at Langston University and his third year serving as the head coach of the Lions.
Quinton Morgan takes over the program on an interim basis until the position can be filled.
Langston President Dr. Kent Smith said in a press release the football program needed to go in a different direction.
“After careful consideration and contemplation, I have decided the University needs to take the football program in a different direction. In an effort to continue our longstanding history of excellence, Mr. Sanders and I reached a mutual and amicable decision to place the needs of the football program as priority and make this necessary change.”
The Lions entered the season ranked in the Top 20 of the NAIA rankings and had high expectations as they were voted as the top team in the 2015 Central States Football League preseason poll. However, the Lions have compiled a 3-3 record, including a 23-20 come from behind homecoming victory over SW Assemblies of God on Saturday.
“I wish to thank Mr. Sanders for his efforts and work on behalf of Langston University and I wish him all the best in his future endeavors. I have full confidence in our Athletic Director, Donnita Drain Rogers and existing coaching staff that our team will soar to new heights, as a solid foundation has been established, Smith said.”
Sanders, a New Orleans native, served as the Lion’s defensive coordinator in 2011 – 2012.
