The Bluejays (2-6) won their second game in eight tries with a 53-52 win over a much improved Noble squad that now falls to 6-3 on the season.

After falling behind five points after the first quarter (13-8), the Jays outscored the Bears 33-26 in the next two quarters to grab their biggest lead at five points. Noble responded however to tie the game at 41-all early in the fourth quarter.

Guthrie grabbed the lead for good with 5:56 to play on an Edgar Baez shot.

The lead increased back to five (53-48) on a Jeremy Brown lay-up with 2:34 to play, but it would prove to be the final points on the night for the Jays.

Noble pulled within a point, 53-52, with 34 seconds remaining. On the following possession the Jays turned the basketball over and gave the Bears one last shot at victory.

The Bears crossed the mid-court line with 15 seconds on the clock and took a shot with two seconds left, but fell short and the Jays escaped with the home win.

Three different Jays scored in double digits and were led by senior Jerrick Warren’s 17 points and followed by senior JT McFadden 15 and junior Edgar Baez’s 10.

Guthrie will practice on Wednesday before taking part in the three-day McGuinness Tournament beginning on Thursday with a 7:30 p.m. tip against Norman. The game can be heard on Guthrie Sports Page.

Guthrie Scoring: Warren 17, McFadden 15, Baez 10, Brown 4, Nichols 4, Irvin 3
