When Pete Papahronis took over as the Lady Jays basketball coach many knew he would bring his defensive pressure with him and that was in full effect Tuesday evening.

The Lady Jays jumped out to a 14-0 lead and never looked back in a 66-29 blow victory. Guthrie improves to 4-4 overall and 2-2 in conference play. Meanwhile, Noble’s two-game winning streak is snapped and they fall to 5-4.

The Guthrie defense held Noble to single digits points in each quarter and held them to 17 points below their season average.

En route to a 20-5 first quarter start, Guthrie forced 12 turnovers and 26 in the game. In the prior game, Guthrie forced Enid into 22 turnovers.

Senior Melinda Murillo led the aggressive defense with several steals that led to easy transition points and taking advantage of that was freshmen Micayla Haynes.

Haynes finished with a game high 18 points, including 12 in the first half, with many of those coming on lay-ups. In total, 9 players scored for the royal blue and white.

Next up will be tournament play as Guthrie participates in the Chickasha Tournament. The Lady Jays have drawn Cache for a 1 p.m. start on Thursday. Guthrie will play either John Marshall or Putnam City on Friday.

Guthrie Scoring: Haynes 18, Murillo 15, Robinson 6, Smedley 6, Allison 6, Love 5, Jones 4, Chappell 4, Freie 2
