The Logan County Historical Society has been awarded a Leadership and Innovation Award by the Mountain Plains Museum Association for its online WPA tour series. The award will be accepted by Amy Loch, Director of the LCHS, at the annual MPMA Conference in Oklahoma City this October.
This project also received an Education and Outreach honorable mention at the annual Oklahoma Museums Association conference this September.
The WPA Tours premiered this summer as a web-based self-guided tour series. The Works Progress Administration was the largest of the New Deal programs designed to provide employment and relief from the Great Depression.
The LCHS tour series includes not only well known WPA sites, but also lesser remembered program information such as the contributions of the Civilian Conservation Corps and the National Youth Administration in Logan County. There are four routes in Logan County, including two in Guthrie, which are walkable, bikeable or drivable. The WPA Tour series is available online at www.logancountyhistoricalsociety.org.
This fall, the Logan County Historical Society is also offering guided downtown WPA walking tours by appointment for a donation of $5 a person. To learn more or to book your personalized tour, contact the Logan County Historical Society at 405-215-9700.
