After an arbitration case, court appearances and a decision from the Oklahoma Civil Court of Appeals, Lt. Mark Bruning will return to work on Monday at the Guthrie Police Department.
Bruning was terminated in Oct. 2013 for an incident at the Mumford & Sons concert in Sept. 2013. However, an arbitrator ruled the City of Guthrie wrongfully terminated Bruning. The arbitrator ruled he return back to the department in the same position (lieutenant) when he was terminated and back pay. The ruling also stated Bruning was suspended for six months without pay. The City of Guthrie appealed that decision to district court, in which, the court upheld the arbitrator’s ruling. Again, the city appealed that decision to the Oklahoma Court of Civil Appeals. In which, again, the City lost the appeal. Related article: City of Guthrie says they will not make a third appeal in Mark Bruning case
Guthrie City Manager Leroy Alsup, who took office less than three months ago, says they are ready for this chapter to come to an end.
“We are turning the page of this chapter,” Alsup said on the phone to Guthrie News Page. “We welcome him back on Monday. We will not look at the past and will move forward.”
Despite returning to work, both parties are still working on an agreement on back pay.
Just recently, Bruning successfully earned his national EMS certification.
