Massive marijuana field discovered in Logan County

A football field of more than 100,000 marijuana plants was found earlier this month in Logan County. Investigators say the value of the crops would be worth millions if cultivated and harvested.

Marijuania FieldOn July 2, the Devon Energy Corporation filed a complaint with the Logan County Sheriff’s Office after one of their field managers discovered a very large number of marijuana plants. The field manager was plotting some land located near County Road 65 and Pennsylvania.

The land was purchased by the Devon approximately a year ago, and has been used for cattle operations in the past.

The area was approximately 75 yards by 100 yards of plants that were too thick to walk through, and was approximately 8-12 feet tall.

Captain Richard Stephens with the Sheriff’s Office said the general appearance of the growth was consistent with a wild grow that may at one point stemmed from a purposed cultivation that had been abandoned and the patch was growing uncontrolled.

“There was an area surrounding the patch that appeared to be much more sparsely growing plants that were not as tall,” Stephens said. “There was no apparent organization of the plants, no irrigation, no weeding, or other evidence of actual cultivation.”

Marijuania Field 2Deputies contacted the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs and an agent responded to the location and examined the marijuana growth. The agent agreed that the marijuana appeared to be naturally growing.

It was determined Devon would proceed with moving all of the top soil off of the area for the drilling rig, and eradicate the plants after they had been moved out-of-the-way of the pad.

“This would best provide for the goals of both agencies, as well as public safety,” Stephens said.

“The Logan County Sheriff’s Office remains vigilant against criminal activity and dedicated to increasing safety in Logan County.”
