Mayor proclaims Constitution Week; Constitution drafted 227 years ago

Since 1955, Congress has set aside September 17-23 annually to be observed as Constitution Week. September 17 of this year marks the 227th Anniversary of the drafting of the U.S. Constitution. Mayor Spradlin, along side members of the Daughters of the American Revolution, honored the week with a proclamation.

“Constitution Week is the perfect opportunity to read and study this great document which is the safeguard of our American liberties,” stated DAR President General Lynn Forney Young.

The Mayor read and signed the proclamation inside the City Hall Council Chambers and declared September 17-23, 2014, as Constitution Week in Guthrie.

DAR has served America for 124 years and is known as the largest women’s patriotic organization in the world with over 175,000 members with approximately 3,000 chapters in 50 states and 13 foreign countries.

  1. Thank you, Chris, for coverage of this event. Samuel King Chapter DAR’s Regent, Sara Memmott, and Nelda Brown followed up with Debbie Longnecker’s 4th grade class at GUES by presenting a U.S. flag to each student along with their proclamation to learn more about the U.S. Constitution.
