STILLWATER, Okla. – As someone who earned his GED, Nicholas Wooden understands the challenges students in his class may face. Wooden is one of the newest instructors in the Adult Education and Family Literacy program at Meridian Technology Center’s South Campus in Guthrie.
“Completing the program is a chance for a student to build their self-confidence so they can progress toward their next goal,” said Wooden.
Meridian offers the prep courses at the South Campus on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 5:30-8:30 p.m. at no cost.
The program leads to students earning their High School Equivalency (HSE), commonly known as the GED or HiSet. “It will open doors for them that weren’t available because many companies aren’t willing to give someone an opportunity without a high school diploma or GED,” said Tonya Nichols, who is also an instructor and has worked as an educator for 15 years.
After registering, students are given a pre-assessment exam which helps instructors determine a student’s level of knowledge in subjects such as math, reading and language arts in order to best help them learn.
“Based on test scores, we will focus on exactly what students need, not subjects they already know,” said Mona Autry, Adult Education & Family Literacy Instructor/Coordinator at Meridian. “Every student receives a customized learning experience.”
The programs at Tech use a combination of group learning activities, one-on-one instruction and virtual programs that provide guidance on campus or at home.
Meridian’s HSE classes serve adults and high school-age students who have not completed a high school education. Upon receiving their HSE certification, students will be prepared to continue their educational and career goals.
“We encourage students to explore the wide variety of programs offered here at Tech so they can prepare for a better future. We assist with research to create a plan that best fits their goals. We strive to connect students with the best resources for different types of education or employment,” said Autry.
Upon completing 40 hours of instruction, students are provided a post-assessment exam to evaluate which areas the student has progressed in and which areas may need more attention. After that, students can begin taking the HSE practice tests. When they feel prepared to take the HSE exam, students can register online and complete the test at Meridian’s testing center or any testing center of their choice.
The HSE can be taken in sections by subject as students feel prepared rather than all at one time. The exam has four tests: math, science, social studies and language arts. The HSE tests are $34 per subject or $136 for all four tests.
“It’s never too late to return to school,” said Nichols.
The preparation programs are offered in both Stillwater and Guthrie. Registering for any of the programs at Tech is as simple as calling 405.377.3333. More information can be found at www.meridiantech.edu/ged.
