DALLAS – The Oklahoma State offense struggled through the first three quarters in the AT&T Cotton Bowl Friday evening, but began to figure out the Missouri defense in the fourth quarter. However, it was too late as the Tigers clinched the game in the final minute.
The game had several intriguing match-ups inside AT&T Stadium, including Kye Staley and Kentrell Brothers. Both Guthrie graduates started for their ball club and meeting for the first and last time in college uniforms.
Staley played in his final game as a Cowboy while Brothers just concluded his second season on the field. The two met up on several plays as the fullback Staley led block to Brothers’ linebacker position.
Following their first encounter between the two BlueJays, Staley held Brothers up on a block for a short Cowboy’s pickup. As they were getting off the Dallas Cowboys turf, Staley patted Brothers on the helmet as to say, “hello.”
The Cowboys picked up their first lead with a Desmond Roland two-yard run to give his team a 31-27 advantage. A lead they would hold onto for only 1:56 as Missouri ran away with a 41-31 win.
“It’s hard on our team,” Mike Gundy said whose Cowboys lose their last two games of the season and finish 10-3.
The Cowboys are now 15-9 all-time in postseason bowl games and 5-3 under Gundy.
Following the Cowboys go-ahead drive, Missouri responded with a 69-yard drive capped off by a Henry Josey 16-yard touchdown run to go up 34-31 with 3:08 to play.
Oklahoma State began to move the ball, but Shane Ray picked up a fumble and took off for a 73-yard game clinching run.
“It was a blur to me. When we fumbled, I was like, ‘Ok.’ But then on the touchdown, I was like, ‘Oh man.’”
Oklahoma State is now 1-3 when playing in the Cotton Bowl.
