Fire destroys home while family is away at the movies

A Guthrie family was enjoying an evening out at the movies when they received a call informing them their home was on fire. The fire has left the family of six without a home as four fire departments battled the fire early Sunday morning.

Fire 01052013The Guthrie Fire Department responded to the southwest corner of 14th Street and Noble Ave. at about midnight after a nearby neighbor could smell smoke from inside his home. He went outside and found the nearby home filling up with smoke.

Smoke was seen leaving the three-story structure when fire crews arrived, but the smoke turned into flames on the top floor and into the roof. Firefighters were able to gain entry through the front door, but were forced to fight the fire from the outside.

Four fire engines responded to the scene. Along with Guthrie, firefighters from Oak Cliff, Coyle and Cashion battled the blaze and were still seen at the home past 5 a.m. The crews worked in the frigid temperatures and snowy conditions.

It is uncertain what started the fire. The homeowners, including four children, were able to save their family dogs as they made their way back home.

The home was built in the 1930’s and is a total loss.

The Guthrie Police Department closed off east and west bound traffic on Noble onto Cleveland and Warner streets while fire crews worked.

I would like to help this family, but don’t know where to go. Please advise. Thanks.

  3. You can make donations through the Guthrie Band. Call the High School 282-5906 and ask for Mr. Blackburn or Mr. Richardson. Their oldest daughter is a Drum Major….
