Guthrie boys’ soccer collects first-ever playoff win

For the first time in Guthrie High School history, the boys’ soccer team is moving on to the second round of the playoffs. The Jays needed penalty kicks and one-stop Monday night to hold off Durant.

The Jays took down the Lions on penalty kicks, 5-4, after playing to a 2-2 tie in double overtime.

Guthrie, winners of five straight, is now 9-4 on the year and will be on the road in Tulsa to take on the Class 5A-4 district champions Booker T. Washington (11-5).

The Bluejays fell behind 2-0 after Durant scored in the first half and hit a quick goal immediately following halftime. Guthrie rallied in the second half with Adrian Gonzales hitting a shot from 45 yards out to put Guthrie on the board, 2-1.

Oscar Ayala scored the tying goal, forcing the game into overtime.

The 2-2 tie was held through two, 10-minute overtime periods forcing the game to penalty kicks.

Scoring the first three for the Jays were seniors Abraham Chavez, Oscar Ayala, and Carlos Hernandez. Durant hit their first three shots before junior goalie Marco Meza blocked Durant’s fourth kick. Junior Geo Campos hit the Bluejay’s fourth shot giving Guthrie the lead. Durant tied it with their next shot. Senior Miguel Rodriguez hit the fifth PK to give the Bluejays the win 7-6.

The Jays have now played in five overtime games this season.

Guthrie, who qualified for the playoffs for the first time in 2018, will play at Booker T. at 7 p.m. on Thursday in hopes of a state semifinal berth.
