Logan County Captain Tom Kutay retires after more than 28 years of service

After more than 28 years of service to the Logan County Sheriff’s Office and its citizens, Captain Thomas “Tom” Kutay is retiring from full-time law enforcement.

Kutay was recognized Monday during the Logan County Board of County Commissioners meeting, where Sheriff Damon Devereaux reflected on the longtime deputy’s impact not only on the public but also on generations of deputies who have served alongside him.

Devereaux said Kutay’s influence extended well beyond his daily duties, estimating he may have had the opportunity to mentor, train, and offer guidance to as many as 1,000 deputies and employees who have passed through the sheriff’s office during his career.

The sheriff also highlighted a message Kutay shared with fellow deputies as he prepared to conclude his full-time career — that law enforcement is about much more than carrying a badge, a gun, and making arrests.

“At the end of the day, we are a service organization,” Devereaux said. “It’s here to help people number one.”

Devereaux credited Kutay with exemplifying that approach throughout his career.

“Thank you so much for your dedication to not just the sheriff’s office, but to the people that have had the opportunity for you to make their lives better every day,” Devereaux said.

Kutay was presented with several retirement gifts during the meeting, including a card signed by fellow deputies and employees, a Cedar Valley golf membership purchased through contributions from sheriff’s office employees, a commemorative watch and a plaque recognizing his 28 years of service.

The plaque recognized Kutay for his “loyal and dedicated service to the Logan County Sheriff’s Office and the citizens of our community,” along with his commitment, professionalism, and devotion to duty.

While Kutay is retiring from his full-time position, he will not completely leave the sheriff’s office. Devereaux said Kutay will transition into the agency’s reserve division.

Kutay is also preparing for more family time in retirement, with Devereaux noting he will be spending time in Colorado helping take care of his grandchildren.
