Mulhall-Orlando FFA members Braylea Lawson and Lane Brown had the opportunity to represent Mulhall-Orlando FFA at the Oklahoma Farm Bureau Capitol Camp on September 2-3 at the Oklahoma State Capitol.
Capitol Camp brought together high school students from across Oklahoma for two days of learning, leadership and hands-on experience with the legislative process. Rather than just learning about government in a classroom, Braylea and Lane were able to experience what it is like to actually take part in the process.
During the camp, students learned about the roles of legislators, how a bill moves through the legislative process and the importance of being able to communicate and advocate for issues they believe in. Students also had the opportunity to develop their own legislation and participate in a mock legislative session inside the Oklahoma State Capitol.
One of the biggest parts of the experience was getting to create a bill and then defend it during the legislative process. This challenged Lane and Braylea to think about issues that matter to them and their communities while also considering different perspectives. The experience showed just how much research, communication, and compromise can go into creating legislation.
The two-day experience was a great opportunity for Mulhall-Orlando FFA to be represented at the state level. Braylea and Lane returned home with new knowledge about government, new connections with other young leaders, and a greater understanding of how they can use their voices to advocate for agriculture and their communities.
Mulhall-Orlando FFA is proud of Braylea and Lane for representing the chapter at Capitol Camp and taking advantage of an opportunity to grow as leaders. Experiences like Capitol Camp help prepare FFA members not only for careers in agriculture, but also for the responsibility of becoming the next generation of leaders in Oklahoma.
