It was a homecoming of sorts for Guthrie tennis coach Mary Hudson when the Jays and Lady Jays traveled to Bartlesville, on Monday. The coach was an All State tennis player at BHS.
The team of her son, Hank Hudson, and Josh Wehrenberg got over the hump with a win in the Bartlesville Tournament playing No. 1 doubles. The duo has piled up several second place finishes.
They first defeated Ponca City 6-3, 6-2 and in the second round took down another 6A opponent Muskogee in three sets 3-6, 6-2, 10-3. In the finals, they defeated top seed McAlester 6-4, 6-0.
In other doubles action, Dalton Jones and Seth Vicchio placed fourth in No. 2 doubles. In the first round they defeated Muskogee in three sets 6-2, 4-6, 10-8. 2nd round they lost to top seed McAlester 6-2, 6-2 before dropping their last game to Owasso 7-6, 6-4.
Dylan Williams placed sixth at No .1 singles when he lost to Bartlesville in the first round, but turned around and defeated Owasso 6-2, 6-3, but fell in the final round with a lost to Sand Springs 6-3, 6-1.
Barrett Porter also placed sixth at No. 2 singles and took the same route as Williams did by losing his first match to Bartlesville 6-3, 6-1 and winning the second round over Owasso. In the final round he lost to Sand Springs 6-1, 6-3.
For the Lady Jays, Brooke Powell placed sixth in No. 1 singles by dropping her first round to Bixby 7-5, 6-2. In her second round she defeated Mcalester 6-1, 6-0 and in the finals lost to Sand Springs.
Kristyn Reed placed eighth in No. 2 singles. She lost to McAlester in the first round and Sand Springs 6-1, 6-0 in the second round before falling in the final round to Ponca City.
Sarah Howells and Taylar Swarzbaugh moved to #1 doubles because Shawnee Smith, who normally plays No. 1 Singles, was sick and Paige Powell, who normally plays No. 1 doubles with Brooke Powell, was sick.
They lost their first round match to Owasso 6-3, 6-0 and second round match to Bixby 6-3, 6-4. Their last round they lost to McAlester 6-1, 6-0.
No. 2 doubles was played by Mariah Adkins and Kati Hartley. They lost their first round to Owasso 6-2, 6-0, second round to Muskogee 6-0, 6-0, and third round to Sand Springs 6-0, 6-0.
