BlueJay tennis sends three to State

The Guthrie boys tennis team arguably had the toughest regional at Kickingbird, but at the end Guthrie will send three athlete’s to State later on this week. 

Hank Hudson returns back to the State Tournament.

The No. 1 doubles tandem of Hank Hudson and Josh Wehrenberg along with Barrett Porter, who plays No. 2 singles, will move their game to the State Tournament to be played Friday and Saturday at Oklahoma City Tennis Center starting at 8:00 a.m. 

Hudson and Wehrenberg defeated Harrah 6-1, 6-0 in the first round, and in the semi-final match took on Booker T. Washington.  They were up on them 4-3 in both sets, but could not hang on to either set and lost 6-4, 6-4.  

In the draw back round they defeated Western Heights 6-1, 6-1.  In the match for third place they defeated Deer Creek 6-4, 6-2. 

The McGuinness No. 1 doubles will be the top seed at state.  A few weeks ago Hudson and Wehrenberg played McGuinness much closer than Booker T. Washington did. 

“Hopefully, we will get a chance to play Booker T. again at State,” coach Hudson said. 

Barrett Porter will make his debut Friday in the State Tennis Tournament.

A season ago, Hudson teamed up with Daniel Breedlove and won the consolation bracket by winning three of four matches played.  

Porter came from behind in his first match to defeat Western Heights 1-6, 6-1, 6-4 before losing to McGuinness in the second round 6-0, 6-0.  In the drawback, Porter again came from behind to win the first set in a tie-breaker and then win the second set 6-1.  In his match for third place, Porter defeated Deer Creek 6-4, 7-5.Dylan Williams did not win a match at No. 1 singles. 

Dalton Jones and Seth Vicchio placed seventh at No. 2 doubles.  

“They have improved a lot for their first year of play,” Hudson said.
