BlueJays and Hornets – what the state has been waiting for

ESPN’s College Game Day will be in Stillwater for the nation’s top college football game Saturday evening for Bedlam, but the state’s best high school football game will be played in the same town the night before.

The Hornets have totaled seven shut-outs this season including the last two weeks.

No. 1 vs No. 2 – Booker T. Washington vs Guthrie.

The marquee game will be a Class 5A state semi-final game between the two power houses with a state championship berth on the line. The game is set for Friday night, in Stillwater, at Pioneer Stadium. The game can be heard on the Triple Play Sports Radio Network (105.1 Fm, 1020 Am, 1580 Am) and streaming on GuthrieSportsPage.com.

Neither team has lost to a 5A team all season and only losses have come to 6A teams. The Hornets dropped a 32-17 decision to Broken Arrow in week two. The Hornets have been a unanimous No. 1 ranked team since the preseason rankings were released. In week three, Enid rallied in the fourth quarter and sneaked out a 37-36 win over the Jays.

Both head coaches know what it takes for their teams to play in a state championship game.

Both head coaches knows what it takes for their teams to play in a state championship game.

Both sidelines will be coached by two coaching staffs that have coached state championship teams. The Hornets brought in head coach Darrel Hall, who coached Star Spencer to the Class 4A state championship last season, in late March. Hall was named the 2009 Oklahoma Football Coaches Association Coach of the Year.

For the Jays, Rafe Watkins will be going for his 96th career victory in his 10th season on the Guthrie sideline and helped lead the Jays to two state championships (2002 and 2007). Many of Watkins assistants were members of the 2007 state title.

These two programs have become familiar with each other since 2002 both on the gridiron and the basketball floor. In 2002, Guthrie won their first ever state title with a 16-13 win over the Hornets. In 2008, it was the Jays basketball squad avoiding a last second shot to capture the gold ball over the Hornets. And back in 2008, it was a game that many will never forget.

Quarterbacks Bryan Dutton and Jordy Albert will play for the right to play for the 5A State Championship next week.

On a bright, sunny day in Tulsa, the Hornets out lasted the Jays 34-27 in triple overtime and would go on to win the ’08 state championship. The Hornets never held a lead into the first overtime, but the Jays thought they had the game won before that.

Then junior Hank Hudson’s 32-yard field goal was ruled no good near the left upright with two seconds left in regulation, despite players and coaches from both sides believing the ball had gone through the up-rights with their immediate reactions.

In 2009, the Hornets were hit with rules violations costing them a playoff berth and three victories that dropped their official record to 5-5. Meanwhile, Guthrie surprised everyone by being a win away from playing in the state championship game.

Good or No Good?
