ODOT updates citizens of Highway 33 reconstruction plan

The Oklahoma Department of Transportation had a full house at the First Christian Church for a public meeting concerning the improvement of State Highway 33 on the city’s west side of town.

ODOT, in cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration is proposing to improve SH-33 through the City of Guthrie. The proposed improvements include reconstruction of the Cottonwood Creek bridge and a portion on each side of the structure.

The reconstruction will improve safety and access through the town as recommended by the department.

The project is estimated to cost $16.4 million with right-of-ways, utility relocation and acquiring land set to begin in 2012. Construction of the highway could begin as early as October 2014, but is likely to start after the proposed date.

Paul Green, the Division Engineer and speaker, told the audience the reconstruction will add four 12 foot lanes with curbs, guttering and sidewalks. The new four-lane highway will begin just east of 1st street and end just east of 12th street (see green and yellow section in map below).

The four-lane bridge would be built just east of 3rd Street and extending to just east of 7th Street (see yellow section in map below).

Green stated that there will not be any road closures on the highway that sees nearly 13,000 vehicles a day. In addition, Green stated that the main goal is replacing the bridge and building a road, but not necessary a flood control project.

Several businesses and homes will be affected by the reconstruction and eventually bought out so that the construction can begin. Those affected range from 1st Street to 10th Street (see purple section in map below) and will eventually be given a 90 days notice and another 30 days after an offer has been made to purchase their property.

12 inch lanes are going to be tough to handle.

  2. Someone should really proof read the articles before you print them. “third 3rd street” and Green stated that “their”. Really should be “there”.

  3. I think Chris does an excellent job. Guthrie has never had “breaking news” like Chris provides. There may be a few mistakes but nothing like the Guthrie Newsleader has. As far as 12 inch lanes that made me laugh.

  4. I wonder why they want to make it a 4 lane bridge…..are they going to expand noble as well?

  5. nothing happened in 2012 as far as aquisitions of the buildings in the area of new bridge, does anyone know when this will happen and construction finally begin on the new via duct? It changes yearly and property owners/or renters want to know if they should stay or go. Do they have 1 year, 2 years, 3? Can someone give un update on beginning construction date or when they will start aquiring owners buildings that will be affected? Please?
