Oh Brothers – Guthrie prevails over the Titans

 

The Guthrie BlueJays waited 365 days to get last year’s 40-14 lost to the Carl Albert Titans behind them. Kentrell Brothers made sure that it happen.

The Jays erupted for 26 second half points en route to a 32-14 win over the Titans. The Jays improve to 6-1 on the season and 4-0 in district play. Carl Albert is 5-2 with losses to the top two ranked teams in 5A (Booker T. and Guthrie).

With the win, Guthrie has a strong grip on the district championship with three weeks left to play. The win also snaps a two-game losing streak to the Titans.

Last season it was the Titans senior leaders coming through, and this year it was the Guthrie seniors proving to be the difference. The biggest difference was the play of Brothers.

Playing in front of the television camera’s, Brothers made big plays on both sides of the ball, including scoring  on 4-touchdown receptions, and finished with 8-catches for 157 yards and added 6-carries for 59-yards rushing. Brothers was named the Farmers and Merchants Bank Player of the Game. He entered the game with the most receptions, yards, and  touchdown receptions in 5A.

The BlueJay offense compiled 418 yards of offense, including 300 in the second half. Sophomore quarterback Bryan Dutton was near flawless by completing 17-of-20 passes for 232 yards and five touchdown passes. He will need just 36 more yards to become Guthrie’s career pass leader.

Derrik Kelly returned back to the team after sitting out last week’s game with an ankle injury and gave the Jays 48 rushing yards on 14-carries.

While the Guthrie offense took off in the second half, it was the Jays defense that proved to be steady throughout the game. Carl Albert managed just 34-yards of offense in the first half and finished with 154 in the game.

The Jays defense is the toughest against the run in 5A (allowing an average of 51-yards) and proved to be true by holding the Titans running game to just 65 yards.

The Titans final two possessions of the first half started at the Guthrie 32 and 37-yard lines, but were unable to move the ball.

The lone first half score came just five seconds into the second quarter when Dutton lifted a pass to Brothers, who had one-on-one coverage throughout the night, made the grab over the Titan defender to go up 6-0.

Guthrie stormed out of the locker room and put 19-third quarter points on the board with three touchdown passes. Two of those finding Brothers (22 and 71 yard scores) and the other finding a wide open Devante McCully down the middle of the field for a 21-yard score. McCully’s touchdown was set up after a Titan turnover. McCully finished with five catches for 49-yards.

The Jays final score came on a 9-yard catch for Brothers to push the lead up to 32-7 with just over five minutes to play in the final quarter.

Guthrie will return back to Jelsma Stadium, Friday night, when they host the El Reno Indians, who lost 55-13 to the Ada Cougars, for Senior Night.
