Guthrie was the midway point for over 800 bicyclists and their families who are taking part in the 34th annual Oklahoma FreeWheel.

Oklahoma FreeWheel is the nation’s second longest-running cross-state tour, traversing a different area of the state each year. It generally follows a south to north route to take advantage of the prevailing winds, and is not a race. The ride is limited to 1000 participants, who stay in host communities along the route. Part of the entry fee goes back to the communities that host the  riders.

The bicyclists started in Frederick, Okla. on June 9 and will conclude the ride in South Haven, KS. After it is all said and done, the participants will have traveled 485 miles.

The group traveled from Watonga into Guthrie and stay overnight before leaving early Thursday morning for the city of Drumright. The riders camped out in the Cottonwood Flats or inside the high school gymnasium.

Guthrie along with towns Elgin, Anadarko, Watonga, Drumright and Ponca City will be overnight destinations, but Guthrie is the midway point for the riders who are riding the entire route. Some riders will begin or end their run here in town.

The Chamber of Commerce spear-headed the event led by Mary Coffin and Lucy Swanson for several months. The chamber provided information, events (music) and food for the riders as they came into town.

The Young Marines, Boy Scouts, Girl Scots, Guthrie Public Schools, the Guthrie Wrestling program, Guthrie Police and the Guthrie Fire Department were several who volunteered to help make the event run smoothly.
