A pedestrian was killed early Saturday morning on Interstate 35 when he was struck by a Logan County deputy’s vehicle. At the time of the accident, the deputy was responding to report of a vehicle facing southbound in the northbound lanes.

Fatality AccidentThe accident occurred at about 12:30 a.m. just south of mile marker 160 in the northbound lanes. The Sheriff’s Department says Deputy Mark Hanneman, 48,  did not see the man standing in the highway when the deputy struck him. The impact caused the man to go through the deputy’s windshield and then was ejected from the vehicle.

Danny Lundy, 46, of Nemahah, NE was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, the adult male pedestrian was travelling back to Nebraska with family members from the Kingfisher area. The family believed that they had lost part of the load from their truck bed. They were using the lights from the vehicle to illuminate the area they were looking in for their property. Lundy was out of the vehicle walking along the median and inside lane looking for the property.

The deputy says his vision was diminished because of the bright headlights.

Hanneman was taken to Integris Edmond Hospital and was treated and released for broken ribs and a broken collarbone. The department says he is a veteran with several years of valued service.

The highway was shut down to one lane for nearly three hours.

  1. not surprised, I just seen a Logan county deputy car go threw crescent amount 70 MPH may be the sheriff can get off his butt and take control of his deputy’s or maybe we need a new sheriff.

  2. I know the family that this happen too and would like to have prayers to go out to them

  3. My prayers also to this family, but lets not forget the deputy also. He was doing a job that does not always come out good. My prayers also to GFD and OHP that had to work this horrible accident. The scene will also haunt them for some time. GFD green crew, my arms reach out to all of you with many hugs. You are a brotherhood standing strong.

  4. I hope it is investigated as to what the speed was that the deputy was driving. I was passing a vehicle on I-35 and looked up and there was a car quickly on my tail, it was a Logan County Sherriff. Once I got back in the right hand lane, he was going much faster than 70 mph. Officers should also follow the rules of the road. I have high respect to officers, but higher for those who follow the rules they enforce.

  5. I have a live video of patrol cars driving at incredible speeds on Waterloo (almost causing a deadly wreck) if any one is interested. The sheriff needs to take control of the situation – i noticed his name was not mentioned on the news. God bless the family of the man hit..

  6. even if the deputy was speeding, do you think going 70 mph (the speed limit), would have prevented this accident. Sounds like the victim was at the wrong place at the wrong time and nothing more.
