The Pollard Theatre Company is the proud to welcome ALTAR BOYZ and introduce Guthrie audiences to the pop sensation that rocks the masses of all generations and denominations by spreading the good news and soothing the troubled souls of Oklahoma through the glory of sweet pop music. ALTAR BOYZ opens at the Pollard Theatre October 4 and continues through October 26.
ALTAR BOYZ introduces a rising Christian boy band from Greenville, Ohio, who are on the last night of their “Raise the Praise” U.S. tour and determined to take their careers to the next level of pop stardom. The Altar Boyz – Matthew, Mark, Luke, Juan and Abraham – are intent on saving souls and raising spirits.
Matthew is the charismatic leader, who holds the group together; Mark, the sweet and sensitive one, who choreographs all the band’s signature moves; Luke, the bad boy; Juan, the Latin lover who’s popular with the ladies; and Abraham, a nice Jewish boy who’s not sure how he ended up in the group. With spectacular dance moves and a fully automated Sony Soul Sensor DX-12 to gauge the spiritual well-being of the crowd, the Altar Boyz bring the funk, lift the spirit and spread the message about God’s love and the power of faith, friendship and family.
Conceived by Marc Kessler and Ken Davenport, with a book by Kevin Del Aguila and music and lyrics by Gary Adler and Michael Patrick Walker, ALTAR BOYZ first premiered in 2004 at the New York Musical Theatre Festival. In the spring of 2005, it transferred to off-Broadway’s New World Stages, where it ran for 5 laugh filled years and 2032 performances. Altar Boyz won the 2005 Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Off-Broadway Musical and was nominated for seven Drama Desk Awards, including Best Music, Best Lyrics, Best Book and Best Musical.
The Pollard cast for ALTAR BOYZ includes UCO students Austin J. Morris and Nicholas Hunter making their Pollard debut as Matthew and Mark, Clayton Blair (Forever Plaid, To Kill a Mockingbird) as Luke , Matthew Morales (Legally Blonde, La Cage aux Folles) as Juan and Jared Blount (The 39 Steps, Avenue Q) as Abraham. ALTAR BOYZ is directed by Pollard resident company member, Timothy Stewart, who directed last season’s Forever Plaid. Other members of the production team include James A. Hughes (scenic designer), Michael James (costume designer), W. Jerome Stevenson & Michael Long (lighting designers), Jennifer Rosson (choreographer) and Todd Malicoate (Music Supervisor).
Director Stewart explains that audiences who have never seen ALTAR BOYZ are in for a treat for the senses. “The music is fun and infectious and the jokes are hysterical and constant, but the best thing about the show is its heart. The Altar Boyz are really good people; exemplar Christian young men whose good nature remind us that we can be better, kinder and more tolerant people. Combine it with that undeniable singing – dancing boy band appeal and it’s a show that makes you feel good,” says Stewart.
