Students and residents at Willow Creek honored their veterans with a ceremony on Veterans Day Monday morning.
The Pre-K students in Rhonda Gillett’s Intergenerational class walked in a single file line as they marched their way into the walk-in area to be surrounded by residents. There were 10 residents who have served their country.
After reciting the pledge of allegiance, Gillett and her students acknowledge each veteran by announcing their accomplishments and honored them by giving them a plaque and a hug for their service. Each plaque was signed by the four-year-old students. Afterwards, the grandma’s and the grandpa’s handed the young students an American flag in a way to say thank you.
It was an emotional scene for one veteran who was proudly wearing his veterans hat. He was seen several times wiping his eyes with a kleenex, as the kids came by with hugs and his plaque.
The children left the ceremony with a song, but not before taking a group photo with the veterans before returning to their classroom.
