The Guthrie Lady Jays were exactly where they wanted to be in the game’s first 10 minutes on Homecoming Night, but it was the next 13 minutes they would like to forget about against the top ranked team in Class 5A.
Guthrie built a 9-3 lead over undefeated Shawnee with 5:20 to play in the first half, but then the Lady Wolves outscored Guthrie 28-1 over a span of 13 minutes in the second and third quarters. Shawnee finished with a 44-21 win to improve to 12-0 while Guthrie falls to 3-8.
The Lady Jays managed four field goals in each half.
Shawnee struggled shooting the ball early, including 1-10 in the first quarter, while Guthrie had a hard time finding shots in the first eight minutes. With that, the Lady Jays held a 4-2 lead at the end of the first period.
Shawnee grabbed their first lead, 11-10,with 2:55 left in the second quarter and never looked back by finishing the quarter on an 11-0 run.
The third quarter was not any better as the Lady Jays failed to score any points by missing eight shots from the field.
Oral Roberts commitment, Taylor Cooper, finished with a game high 16 points. Leading the way for Guthrie was junior Melinda Murillo with 11 points.
