Seven Bluejays sign football letter of intents

In front of a packed Guthrie High School cafeteria, seven Bluejays from the football program signed their letter of intent on Wednesday morning.

With balloons, baked goodies and a banner at each of their respected table, Campbell Leach, David Vargas, Dominic Goosby, Dylan Dollar, Jamaul Romas, Marcellus Owens and CJ Ward signed to play college football.

“To get these guys where they are right now, everybody deserves a huge round of applause,” head coach Kelly Beeby said to the crowd. “I’m extremely happy for the community.”

Dominic Goosby signs his letter with family members on Wednesday.

Goosby, a team captain in 2018, signed to play with the Grand View Vikings in Des Moines, Iowa. The school won the 2013 NAIA national championship and seven straight conference championships.

The three-year starter finished with 84 tackles and three sacks for the Jays.

Marcellus Owens signs his letter with family members on Wednesday.

Owens, who was named to the Oklahoma Coaches Association All-State team as a wide receiver, signed with Northeastern Oklahoma (NEO) in Miami, Okla.

The three-year player recorded 30 receptions this past season for 691 yards and 10 touchdowns to lead the Jays in all three categories. Owens finished his Guthrie career with 71 tackles and five interceptions.

Dylan Dollar signs his letter with family members on Wednesday.

Also signing with NEO was Dollar.

Beeby says Dollar, an offensive lineman, was known for his work ethic and hard work in the weight room. Those two attributes helped transform him into one of the top lineman in Class 5A.

The University of Central Oklahoma signed two of the seven Bluejays.

Jamaul Ronas signs his letter with family members on Wednesday.

Ronas, who was sidelined majority of the season with a knee injury, was primed to excel at left tackle. Despite playing football for a few years, the Bronchos are excited to bring in the 6-5, 265 lineman.

Campbell signs his letter with family members on Wednesday.

“What I’m going to remember about Campbell Leach more than anything is the transformation he made from a chubby little freshmen into one heck of an athlete for us this year,” Beeby said. “He was extremely disruptive.”

Leach, who was named a Class 5A All-Star by the coaches, finished the season with 77 tackles, six sacks and one interception.

The lone interception, for the preferred walk on for the Bronchos, came in an overtime win in Duncan to help lead the Jays to a first round playoff win.

“I will always remember that play,” Beeby said.

David Vargas signs his letter with family members on Wednesday.

Vargas, the Jays extremely accurate kicker, signed with the Bulldogs at Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford, Okla.

Vargas, who was honored Tuesday evening at the Jim Thorpe award banquet, provided all the kicking duties for the Jays.

Nicknamed “The Boot,” Vargas connected on 10-of-15 field goals, including a long of 43 yards. The senior averaged 35 yards per punt and often kicked the football five yards deep into the end zone on kick offs.

Beeby says he will always remember the 27-yard field goal in overtime to beat Duncan on first down.

“It would have been good from 45 yards,” Beeby said.

Ward (not pictured) signed with the Langston Lions, but will have his official signing day on Tuesday, February 12 at 11:30 a.m.

Ward averaged nearly 9 yards per carry this season, seven total touchdowns and four interceptions.
