Logan County Sheriff Jim Bauman released a letter last week says his department supports the 2nd Amendment right to protect and encourages everyone to speak to them about obtaining their concealed license.
In a two-page letter posted on the Logan County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page, Sheriff Bauman says with the recent events in San Bernardino he does not want anyone to be caught off guard.
On December 16, seven of the eight elected Logan County officials in Logan County voted unanimously to allow county employees to defend themselves while at work with open carry. Related story: County employees now have the option of open carry while at work
In addition, Guthrie Public Schools has formed a committee to review if school personnel should be able to carry a weapon for additional security. Related story: School board forms committee to discuss arming school staff
Here is the letter from Sheriff Bauman.
“Recent events in San Bernardino have shown that there are no areas that are off limits to our enemies who would harm you or members of your family.
We must not panic, but we must take measures to increase our vigilance and security. Those who are considering obtaining their Carrying Concealed license or who wants more information about it, we encourage you to come speak with us and we will answer questions or explain the process. We support your 2nd Amendment right to protect yourself and others. I would encourage education and training for firearm and self-defense.
However, being armed is not enough. You must become proficient with your weapon and maintain that proficiency.
I hope there is never a time you are called upon to defend yourself or others around you, but if the need arises you must be prepared. My deputies as well as officers across this great country stand ready to defend you and your loved ones, but our enemies are often unknown.
I urge each and every one of you to encourage your family members, no matter the age, to be alert in your neighborhoods, workplaces, schools and any public setting. Every officer will tell you that you need to report ANY suspicious activity. In today’s world, your observations, no matter how seemingly insignificant, may be the key to saving lives. With your help, law enforcement has thousands of eyes and ears to help detect the enemy.
Have a plan when in public. This goes for adults, young adults and children.
– Look for unusual behavior, people at events wearing too much clothing, suspicious or unattended packages and strange devices. Alert law enforcement or security immediately.
– Know where emergency exits are located in buildings or public areas you are visiting. Plan how to get out if an attack occurs.
– Visit the Logan County Website or the Sheriff’s Office to begin the process of legally arming yourself. We process applications Monday thru Thursday, 8:30- 11:00 and 12:00-3:00
– Be vigilant… be prepared… be legally armed. Beware and be ready.
– May God bless you and your family. To the Citizens of Logan County.”
