It was not pretty in the beginning for the Guthrie Lady Jays basketball club, but it was beautiful in the end.
The Lady Jays had four turnovers in the first four minutes and made just one of their first five shots in the first quarter, but they picked up a key conference win, 39-25, on the road in El Reno Tuesday evening.
Guthrie has won their last three games and has improved to 7-3 on the season and 3-1 in the Suburban Conference. El Reno drops to 3-8 overall and 1-4 in the conference.

Guthrie held a slim 3-2 first quarter lead and after El Reno scored the first two points in the second quarter, the Lady Jays went on a 9-0 run in the next 2:06 to open up a 12-4 lead. However, El Reno responded with a 5-0 run of their own to close out the first half, but Guthrie held a 12-9 halftime lead.
El Reno started the third quarter with a 6-2 run to take the lead back with 4:36 left, but 62 seconds later senior Jill Davis hit a three-point shot to give Guthrie the lead for good.
Ashley Shields bucket with three seconds before the end of the quarter gave the Jays a 23-17 advantage. Shields finished with a game high and season high 18 points, including 11 from the free throw line. She was named the Farmers and Merchants Bank Player of the Game.
As a team, Guthrie connected on 17 of 26 free throws for 65%, but in the fourth quarter alone converted 14 of 19 (73%). El Reno was only able to get within five points of the Lady Jays early in the final quarter.
Next up for Guthrie will be Deer Creek, for Homecoming, on Friday night.
