It was not the most impressive win of the season, but it goes near the top for the Guthrie Lady Jays basketball team.

After surrendering a fourth quarter lead to Carl Albert the previous night, the Lady Jays were not going to allow that to happen again on Saturday afternoon against the Deer Creek Lady Antlers.

Guthrie guard Ashley Shields field goal before the half gave the Lady Jays the lead for the rest of the afternoon to defeat the 11th ranked Lady Antlers 35-31 inside Leroy Estes Fieldhouse. Guthrie improves to 9-8 on the season and avenge’s their lost earlier this season to Deer Creek (48-45).

For the second straight day Jill Davis led the scoring ways with 14 points, including five points from the charity stripe.

Deer Creek built their biggest lead at four, 14-10, in the second quarter, but Guthrie finished the final 3:42 of the half on a 6-0 run with buckets from Davis, Shields, and a Gracynn Smith free throw.

Head coach Terry Carris squad continued their scoring ways to begin the third quarter by hitting the first three field goals to increase their lead up to nine, 23-14. Deer Creek stopped the Guthrie 13-0 run and a scoring drought of 7:00 with a bucket in the quarter.

The Lady Jays struggled from the free throw line in the first three-quarters by going 2-for-10, but in the fourth quarter shot 8-of-10 and was a good thing as Deer Creek made a run with their full court pressure defense that forced 10 fourth quarter turnovers and 21 overall.

Guthrie Scoring:
Jill Davis 14, Ashley Shields 8, Melinda Murillo 6, Gracynn Smith 5, Mikaela Murillo 2
